The good news is that you do not have to learn it all at once. A little study, taken in a sensible order, goes a long way.
This guide sets out a friendly path for someone who is new to the water and wants to build up the theory at a comfortable pace. Take your time, revisit each area often, and enjoy the process of understanding how it all fits together.
Start Broad and Free
A good first step is the free Maritime Master app. It is an all-round learning companion that brings together interactive tools covering the COLREGs, IALA buoyage, lights, signal flags, knots, meteorology, and exam practice. Because it works offline, you can study wherever you happen to be, whether that is at home, on the train, or waiting by the water. Spending time here helps you get a feel for the whole subject before you narrow your focus.
Move to Day Skipper Theory
Once the broad picture feels familiar, the free Maritime Master Skipper app is a natural next stop. It is a day skipper theory app with interactive chartwork, including position fixing, dead reckoning, and course to steer, along with tides, the COLREGs, IALA buoyage for both regions, and meteorology. Think of it as a study companion that supports a shorebased course rather than replacing one. Like the main app, it works offline, so you can revise whenever a spare moment appears.
Add Focused Topics
With the foundations in place, you can deepen your knowledge of the areas that tend to reward a little extra attention. These focused apps let you revise one subject at a time and return to it whenever you want a refresher.
Maritime Master Knots is a one-time purchase that teaches forty two essential knots as animated real-time 3D rope, with numbered step by step instructions and Ashley Book of Knots references. It is a learning aid to help you understand how each knot is formed. Remember that knots are safety equipment. Practise with real rope, never rely on any app alone where a knot bears load or protects life, and get qualified in-person instruction for climbing, rescue, and working at height.
Maritime Master IALA Buoyage is a one-time purchase covering sixteen marks across both regions, with animated night lights, a light simulator that writes chart notation, and five quiz modes. It is for study only, not for identifying marks at sea, and not a substitute for an approved course, but it is a friendly way to make buoyage stick in your memory.
Maritime Master COLREGs is a one-time purchase that presents all Rules 1 to 38 and the annexes in plain English alongside the convention wording. It includes scenario diagrams, a night lights view, quizzes, and flashcards, and it is for study only.
