Latitude and Longitude Explained

Every place on Earth can be described with two simple ideas: how far north or south it sits, and how far east or west. Put those two measurements together and you have a position, a way of naming a single point on a round world. This pair of ideas is the foundation of the whole language of navigation, and one of the first things worth understanding when you begin studying the subject.
Latitude and longitude can feel abstract at first, so this guide keeps things conceptual. There is no coordinate arithmetic here, just the plain ideas behind the grid that mariners and mapmakers have used for centuries. Once the picture makes sense, the numbers become far easier to learn.
A Grid Around the Globe
Imagine the Earth wrapped in a fine net of lines. Some run around the globe from side to side, and others run from pole to pole. Where any two of these lines cross, you have a unique address. This is the basic idea of the geographic grid: a shared system that lets anyone, anywhere, describe the same spot in the same way.
Latitude Measures North and South
Latitude tells you how far a place lies to the north or south of the equator, the imaginary line that circles the middle of the Earth. Places on the equator have the lowest latitude, and the value grows as you travel towards either pole. Because it is measured relative to a natural reference, the equator, latitude has been possible to estimate from the sky for a very long time.
Longitude Measures East and West
Longitude tells you how far east or west a place lies from a chosen reference line that runs between the poles, known as a meridian. Unlike the equator, there is no single natural starting point for longitude, so one meridian is agreed upon as the reference and everything else is measured from it. Historically, working out longitude reliably was a difficult problem for seafarers.
Parallels and Meridians
The lines of latitude are often called parallels, because they run parallel to the equator and never meet. The lines of longitude are called meridians, and unlike parallels they converge, coming together at the north and south poles. Together, parallels and meridians form the crossing pattern that turns a featureless globe into something you can read.
From Two Numbers to a Place
On its own, a single latitude or longitude only narrows a location down to one line. It is the combination of the two that pins down an exact point. This is why positions are always given as a pair, and why understanding both halves of the system matters so much.
