Day skipper shorebased theory is the classic starting point for anyone learning to navigate small craft. It covers a broad set of topics, and seeing how they fit together makes the whole course feel far more approachable. This guide gives you a high-level roadmap of what a shorebased theory course typically covers, so you have a clear sense of what lies ahead before you begin.

Navigation and Chartwork
The heart of day skipper theory is chartwork: working out where you are and how to reach where you want to go. You will meet position fixing, dead reckoning, and course to steer, along with the ideas of set and drift that describe how tide and leeway push a boat off its intended track. In the Skipper app, interactive worked examples for position fixing, dead reckoning, and course to steer respond to the values you enter, so you can follow each method step by step rather than only reading about it.
Tides
Tides shape almost every passage, so a theory course spends real time on tidal heights and tidal streams. You will learn to read how the height of water changes through the day, and how streams speed up, slow down, and change direction. The app includes tidal heights, tidal streams, and a tidal stream atlas to practise with, plus calculators for speed, time and distance, ETA, set and drift, and unit conversion, each showing the method behind the answer.
The COLREGs
The COLREGs, the collision regulations, are the rules of the road at sea. Learning them means understanding who gives way, the shapes and lights that vessels show, and how to recognise what another vessel is doing. Skipper includes the COLREGs with full rule text, together with day shapes, sound signals, VHF channels, and radio frequencies, so you can revise the rules and the signals that go with them in one place.
Buoyage
Buoyage is the system of marks that guides you along channels and around hazards. Day skipper theory introduces the IALA system, including the differences between Region A and Region B. The app covers IALA buoyage for both regions, letting you study the marks and their meanings until they become second nature.
Meteorology
Weather is part of every passage plan, so theory courses include a grounding in meteorology. You will look at the Beaufort scale, sea states, cloud types, weather fronts, and the Coriolis effect that helps explain how weather systems behave. Skipper gathers all of these into one reference, so you can revise the basics of reading the sky and the forecast whenever it suits you.
A Study Companion
Beyond the core topics, the app adds passage planning and pilotage guides, a compass deviation tool that shows true to compass and back step by step, an emergency procedures quick reference, and a nautical glossary.
